HOW MUCH LIFT DOES THE VEHICLE ACTUALLY GET?

The coil package will give owners a true 4” of vehicle lift. This lift is generally done at the vehicles Tare weight and as such will be at 4” during the most common everyday loaded condition. Spring ratings are done to ensure they will carry the additional capacity that the GVM will provide. A shock absorber package is carefully matched to provide the Maximum amount of wheel travel for that given lift height. Rigorous testing and tuning has been done to ensure amazing handling both on and offroad in all conditions.

WHAT TYRE AND RIM SIZES CAN BE RUN WITH THIS KIT?

Tires from a basic 265/70R16 up to a true 35×12.5R17 can be run in combination with rims from 16” 17” and  18” in diameter and 0 to -25 offset. Apart from a full 35” tire the 305 and 315 metric equivalents (34.4”) can also be used legally.

WHY CHOOSE A COIL CONVERSION?

While leaf springs have always been known as an economical suspension setup for carrying load and locating the diff, they are far from optimal when it comes to ride quality for both  on-road and off-road performance. Coils springs are available in a huge range of different heights and rates when compared to leaf springs. Coil Springs are readily available with rates to suit all applications whether you’re a heavy tourer or a 4wd carrying no weight. A coil conversion will  transform your 4wding capability as your suspension is greatly enhanced with more overall wheel travel, added traction and a comfier more controlled ride.

WHAT IS A COIL CONVERSION?

On a leaf spring vehicle the spring (leaf) also does the locating on the diff as it travels through the suspension cycle. A coil conversion replaces the factory leaf springs, shackles and bushes and replaces it with a steel fabricated crossmember that supports coil springs between the diff and chassis. The Upper and Lower control arms locate the diff as it travels through the suspension cycle, allowing the spring to do only what they do best – suspend the vehicle. Coil spring design allows the vehicle to have a wide range of spring load characteristics from soft comfy linear, dual rate for loaded and unloaded comfort or heavy duty for those that carry large constant loads. The Control arms accurately locate the diff as it travels up and down and the geometry is finely tuned to reduce dreaded rear steer and allow massive articulation while reducing tire to chassis interference. Link suspension also nearly eliminates wheel hop under acceleration which reduces load on the axles and gears.

WHAT DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING IS USED TO CORRECT THE TRACK WIDTH?

Superior Engineering creates the Ultimate Landcruiser diff housing by starting with 4140 Chromoly 13.5mm wall housing tubes that are ~900Mpa average Yield Strength where our competition uses ~6mm wall carbon hollow bar that is ~470Mpa, meaning just in the tubes alone a Superior Engineering housing are almost double the strength over our competitors. FEA tests were completed with 15 tonne load on the rear axle, and even then they only showed a deflection in the housing of less than 1mm, no other brand Landcruiser housing come close!

If material strength and thickness wasn’t enough, we are also the only manufacturer using 90mm axle tubes; almost all other are still using the smaller 80mm axle tube. Utilising a 90mm axle tube greatly increases the overall strength of the housing to resist bending from excessive loading or side impacts.

Adding to this the center section of our diamond diff is fabricated as standard with 6mm high tensile 830Mpa plate! High Tensile, wear-resistant and hardened steel plate is the perfect match for the 4140 chromoly outer tubes. For added strength, it has a 4mm High Tensile Diff Guard / Skid Plate added to the rear and bottom of the housing which further protects the pinion gears and diff centre.

Superior Chromoly Diamond Diff Housing

A massive increase in ground clearance compared to our competitors is achieved through the use of larger axle tubes and a wider overall diamond, meaning we do not have weld additional gusseting underneath the diff housing to add strength.

Overall width of the diamond center is wide and tapered, which adds an incredible increase in structural integrity and strength, the additional internal gussets of the diamond center not only help with overall strength but provide channels for oil flow aiding in cooling.

Superior Engineering is the only Australian manufacturer to use Aerospace grade – 300M axles made exclusively by RCV – ‘The manufacturer of the world toughest 4WD axles!’. These axles are the same material and hardening used in Ultra4 race cars, trophy trucks as well as an array of offroad weapons in the USA and around the world, and they are at no extra cost.  The RCV 300M axles offer a lifetime warranty against breaking!

The RCV axles are attached to the housing using a billet 4340 drive plate. Factory axles are prone to break once a wheel bearing becomes loose, the use of a drive plate almost stops the fatigue caused wheel bearing play and provides a stronger overall axle drive assembly.

Our Diff upgrades kits come standard with a corrosion resistant Black powder coat finish; other optional colors are available at NO EXTRA COST! Not an additional extra like some manufacturers, we can also offer raptor liner finish at no extra cost.

The replacement housing is built to precise factory dimensions and the 4140 chromoly spindles, allows you to retain all your factory brakes and bearings. OE swaybar locations are retained on the Leaf – Replacement housing, allowing the use of factory or aftermarket swaybars to customise the ride and handling. The finished chromoly housing is CNC machined to accept fitment of factory locked or unlocked third members.

WHY DO 76 SERIES LANDCRUISER VEHICLES REQUIRE G.V.M (Gross Vehicle Mass) UPGRADES?

Real-world testing has shown that a typically fitted-out 76 Series with bull bar, winch, extra fuel tank, and a rear bar with spare wheel carrier can be easily approaching the manufacturers Original Equipment GVM of 3060kg. That’s without any passengers or any luggage in the vehicle!

SOLUTION:

The Superior Engineering – OUTBACK TOURER™ kit is specifically designed to suit any vehicle owner/operator who has a need to carry loads approaching 740 kg. All vehicles such as Loaded Tourers ,Farmers and Tradesmen, Government Departments, Mining Companies, large and small businesses can benefit from the added payload capacity. With the ever increasing possibility of litigation under common law if a vehicle is operated beyond its legal Load Limits an approved GVM increase in an almost essential upgrade.

USING SUPERIOR ENGINEERING OUTBACK TOURER™ – UPGRADE KIT, (FEDERALLY APPROVED) HELPS AVOID THESE PROBLEMS.

76 Series installed with a Superior Outback Tourer kit

WHAT AMOUNT OF INCREASE SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Officially sanctioned GVM Kit provides:

  • GVM to 3800kg
  • GVM increase of 740 kg

WHAT TOWING CAPACITY AM I ALLOWED?

  • A Full 3500KG Braked tow capacity
  • 750kg un-braked towing

Is the GCM Upgraded?

GCM (Gross Combined Mass) is used by vehicle manufacturers in sales brochures noting the combination of GVM and BTC. Please Note: The GCM (Gross Combined Mass) doesn’t form part of a Superior Engineering Approval for Second Stage Manufacture. There is currently no federal government approved test to upgrade the GCM.

It is basically governed by the new GVM of the vehicle and the maximum braked towing capacity. The original equipment maximum braked towing capacity for example on the LC76 is 3500kg. This doesn’t increase nor decrease when a Superior Engineering Outback Tourer™ Kit with GVM Upgrade is fitted, it remains at 3500kg.

The new vehicle GVM becomes 3800kg (LC76) as noted in the Superior Engineering SSM (Second Stage of Manufacture Upgrade). An important factor that must be considered is the ball weight of the towed apparatus. When towing – whatever the measured ball weight is, it must be subtracted from the vehicles GVM. GCM is not noted or listed as part of our Approval within this vehicle Category (LC76 NB1).

WHO CAN FIT SUPERIOR ENGINEERING OUTBACK TOURER™ SUSPENSION UPGRADE KITS?

Because the Kit is approved on the basis of Superior Engineering being a Second Stage Manufacturer, and the responsibility ultimately lying with Superior Engineering, only Superior Engineering Authorised Fitters (registered Production Facilities) are approved to fit this Kit. All OUTBACK TOURER™ – Upgrade Kit’s are supplied with detailed fitting instructions and comprehensive documentation.
